Martin O'Malley, Governor

Mayor Martin O’Malley counts among his major accomplishments establishing the Mayor’s Office of Minority Business Development to expand the number, magnitude and success-rate of minority- and women-owned businesses in the City, lobbying repeatedly for full-funding of every aspect of Thornton, more than doubling drug treatment funding and playing an instrumental role in protecting Maryland’s families from a 72 percent increase in BGE utility bills.

O’Malley indicates that if elected governor, he will fully fund the Thornton education plan including the Geographical Cost of Education Index, return the state to the goal of treatment of demand, work to keep college tuition affordable, make healthcare more accessible and affordable and return to the polices that encourage Smart Growth.

With the full recognition that the O’Malley administration has not been free of controversy, some of which, arguably, might have been of his own making, we nevertheless believe him to be far more sensitive to issues which are important to the African American Community.

O’Malley’s position on issues like minimum wage, the death penalty, outrageous utility increases, slot machines, and the local oversight of the education of our children makes him a clear choice for the AFRO endorsement for Maryland’s Governor.

If elected governor, however, he needs to commit to accomplishing:

  • Reintroducing the HBCU protections mandated by the Supreme Court against “duplicationâ€?
  • Resolving the Baltimore school problem
  • Credible reduction in crime
  • De-politicize the Public Service Commission

The Afro endorses Mayor Martin O’Malley for Governor of Maryland.
