Senator Barbara A. Mikulski to Endorse O’Malley and Brown at “Kitchen Table Talk with NursesO’Malley/Brown to Announce Plan to Attract and Retain Best NursesLUTHERVILLE, MD (July 16, 2006) – United States Senator Barbara A. Mikulski will join with Martin O’Malley and Anthony Brown at a “kitchen table talk with Registered Nurses in the home of Ms. Roberta Schwartz tomorrow, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. at 11748 Greenspring Avenue in Lutherville, Maryland. Following the kitchen table talk, Senator Mikulski will join with O’Malley and Brown at a press conference in front of Ms. Schwartz’s home, where O’Malley and Brown will announce a plan to better recruit, retain and educate nurses in Maryland. Studies have shown a highly correlative relationship between a positive medical outcome and the level of nursing care available to a patient. Yet despite the importance of qualified nurses, the Commission on the Crisis in Nursing has estimated that the State’s shortage will grow from 11,000 to 20,000 registered nurses by 2012. Further compounding the problem, the shortage is expected to grow worse as more veteran baby-boomer nurses retire. Last week, O’Malley and Brown released plans to make health care insurance and prescription drugs more affordable for Maryland families, seniors and small businesses.
