Governor O'Malley and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke to reporters outside the White House Friday about the impact the federal stimulus funding has had on the state of Maryland. The Governors had just left a meeting with Vice President Biden. Watch the video of their remarks below:
Governor Martin O'Malley and President Barack Obama will host a health care rally tomorrow at the Comcast Center in College Park.
Come out to the event and hear the President discuss why our health care system is in such urgent need of reform.
Doors will open at 9am to the free event and the rally will begin at 11am. All attendees will be required to go thorough airport-style security.
The health care debate isn't just important for our country as a whole. It's got major consequences for Maryland - our families, businesses and communities.
Communities across Maryland will be safer over the course of the next three years. Announced today at an event in Philadelphia, grants from the economic stimulus package will fully fund 112 Maryland law enforcement officers' salaries and benefits for the next three years.
Governor Martin O'Malley was proud to join Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder and four other governors to announce the grant program. The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) branch of the Department of Justice will administer the grants.
"We saw the value of COPS program first hand in the City of Baltimore," said Governor O'Malley. "Once the nation's most violent and drug addicted City in America, we worked with law enforcement and the people of our City to take our streets and neighborhoods back for our families. And together we achieved a 40 percent reduction in violent crime."
Eight police departments in Maryland will benefit from the COPS Hiring Recovery Program:
Baltimore - 50 positions
Bladensburg - 1 position
Cambridge - 2 positions
Laurel - 3 positions
Prince George's County - 50 positions
Princess Anne - 1 position
Riverdale - 1 position
Salisbury - 4 positions
O'Malley impressed upon the importance of keeping Maryland's families and communities safe:
"There is no greater or more solemn obligation we have as public servants than the protection of our citizens. Thanks to the leadership of President Obama and our federal delegation, local law enforcement agencies have an unprecedented opportunity to create or save jobs that directly impact the safety of our neighborhoods."
In addition to the COPS program, Governor O'Malley and the Maryland legislature have allocated an additional $10,000 of economic stimulus money for the purchase of radios, bullet-proof vests, computers and other equipment to support the new officers.
Tomorrow morning, Governor O'Malley will join Vice President Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder and several fellow Democratic Governors for a major Recovery and Reinvestment Act announcement.
The event will take place at 10:15 am tomorrow in Philadelphia City Hall. Governor O'Malley will join Pennsylvania Governor Rendell, New Jersey Governor Corzine and Delaware Governor Markell.

Today, Governor O'Malley testified before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to showcase Maryland's interactive website that tracks the state's funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Alongside Governors Deval Patrick of Massachusetts and Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania, O'Malley discussed the states' efforts to maximize transparency and accountability.
"Since taking office, we have operated under the very simple notion that a government that is paid for by the people of Maryland ought to work for the people of Maryland," O'Malley said. "Whether responding to a national pandemic or a national recession, the basic principles of smart, efficient governing remain the same. It is the rational application of human efforts to human problems that commands true accountability on all levels of government."
The site launched an improved interactive map that provides more detailed information and improves accessibility. With the new map, Marylanders can view funding tracks by department and by county. Additionally, users can send comments and questions directly to StateStat, Maryland's performance-measurement and management program that runs the site.
The site reports that the state has spent $3.9 billion in stimulus funding. Health and human services, education, and transportation have received the lion's share of the funding. Nevertheless, O'Malley views all of the economic stimulus funding as vital, calling it "a true lifeline."
"Were it not for these funds, we would have been forced to lay off 700 state employees, erode health care benefits, and forgo investments in public education which have produced record test scores and earned our state's schools a number on in the nation ranking for our public schools. This critical legislation is helping us create and save jobs, and position our State's economy to bounce back from recession. In Maryland, we share the President's commitment to investing these funds with maximum efficiency, openness, and transparency," the Governor said.
Governor O’Malley visited the White House Friday morning for President Obama’s announcement of a new position of Cyber Security Czar for the federal government.
As chair of the Homeland Security Task Force for the National Governor’s Association, O’Malley is an authority on government cybersecurity.
In an April interview with the Baltimore Business Journal, Governor O'Malley said, “this is an ideal time for Maryland to tap into the tremendous opportunities in the cyber-security industry. As the U.S. government ramps up to spend billions over the next several years to protect government systems and networks from increasing cyber threats, we expect many of those dollars to flow into Maryland.”

On Wednesday Governor O’Malley accompanied Vice President Joe Biden on a tour of the WMATA Carmen Turner Maintenance and Training Facility in Landover to celebrate Earth Day.
The brick and concrete facility may not seem like the greenest place in the state of Maryland, but it is one of the best examples of how this great state is leading the way towards a green future. That’s because Gov. O’Malley and the state legislature have committed to converting all the busses in the Maryland Transit Administration fleet to hybrid-electric fuel sources in the next five years.
The Vice President explained on the tour that capitalizing on alternative energy sources will not only halt climate change and save the environment, but it will also power the economy and create jobs in the near term.
In an email to supporters today, O’Malley said, “I’m proud Maryland is leading the charge towards a greener future and healthier economy – and prioritizing the environment so that every day is Earth Day.”
Governor O’Malley asked his constituents to plant a tree in their neighborhood to help reach the goal of planting 1 million new trees in Maryland by 2011. You can get a $25 coupon towards your purchase of a tree on this website.

Over the last several months, Marylanders have made their way into our neighboring battleground states, on which the result of this election may very well rest. But we also take nothing for granted here in Maryland. We'll spend Election Day out at the polls throughout Maryland, encouraging voters to cast their ballot for change, and a new direction for America.
As you make your way to the polls this morning, be sure to bring your neighbor or family member so all eligible Marylanders participate in freedom's greatest privilege.
And while you're there, be sure to vote yes on Questions 1 and 2. Marylanders have a unique opportunity to affirm our commitment to open and accessible elections by voting for Question 1: Early Voting. Similarly, voters in Maryland can reaffirm our commitment to our future, by approving more than $660 million in slots revenue for our schools.
We hope to see you out at the polls today. Later tonight, as the results come in, join us at Bourbon Street Live, 316 Guilford Avenue in Baltimore, to celebrate victory!
Today, we've crisscrossed Philadelphia meeting enormous crowds of excited supporters ready to change the direction of our nation, and elect Senator Obama the next President of the United States.
After stops at area colleges and universities, including Temple, La Salle, and St. Joseph's, where literally thousands of students have showed their enthusiasm for Senator Obama, we're on to more Philadelphia area events this evening. The excitement here is hard to put into words - so many students, parents, and working families eager for a new direction, and new leadership to take us there.
Tomorrow night will be an evening to remember, as this historic election culminates with the selection of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States.
We're going late into the night tonight, to make sure every last undecided voter hears our message, and that every last Obama supporter makes it to the polls tomorrow.
The effects of the nation's economic hardship are hitting Maryland hard. We're fighting every day to protect Maryland’s families during these tough economic times. We’re also working every day to make sure that government and its programs work for people.
