There’s a New Way to Govern

Wednesday October 11, 2006

… and it starts with measuring both inputs and outputs. In the past, we know that government has had a hard time tracking results, making changes, and figuring out what works and what needs to go.

But in Baltimore, through…

1.Accurate and Timely Intelligence

2.Effective Tactics and Strategies

3.Rapid Deployment of Resources

4.Relentless Follow-Up and Assessment

Baltimore has saved over $300 million, but more importantly, we have stood with our citizens to tackle the stubborn problems facing our City.

This Columbus Day, Martin O’Malley and Anthony Brown stood atop Federal Hill to outline their plan to bring this accountability system to our State. Some of the most difficult agencies and services that have been outside the grasp of Bob Ehrlich could finally see the changes and progress they’ve been longing for.

For example, juvenile, social and public safety services, that have been the subject of Ehrlich’s campaign promises in 2002, have so much potential to serve those most in need.
And that’s why they need a true partner working to make sure they’re internally sound and capable.

CitiStat has a proven record of success and has earned the attention of other cities and officials around the world who have visited CitiStat in progress. It has also won the Harvard Kennedy School of Government award for innovations in American Government.

And while the attention is terrific, the real payoff has been our ability to come together, with accountability, to meet the needs of our City – everything from overtime and sick leave to trash collection and snow removal.

We know that extending this program statewide will give our State the edge we need to unlock our enormous potential.
