Martin O'Malley - Short Biography
Called one of America’s top 5 Mayors by Time magazine, and one of “Five Fresh Faces” leading the Democratic Party by Business Week, Martin O’Malley is leading Baltimore’s comeback by making the city safer and cleaner, providing greater opportunities for children, revitalizing neighborhoods and attracting business investment, and creating a more accountable, responsive, and cost effective government. The Wall Street Journal says investors are now “rushing” to Baltimore. Martin O’Malley believes the foundation of Baltimore’s comeback begins with public safety. Under O’Malley’s leadership Baltimore is leading the nation in the rate of reduction of violent crime and freeing its communities of drug addiction by increasing access to treatment. Martin O’Malley knows the best measure of progress is the achievement of our children. For the first time in a generation a majority of Baltimore’s children are achieving above the national average in reading and math and making improvements each year. Expanding investments in youth have moved Baltimore from the 14th to 2nd best funded school system in Maryland and resulted in thousands of at risk children participating in summer jobs and faith-based mentoring programs. Martin O’Malley promotes an economic development strategy focused on building from strengths and investing in people. Creating safer and cleaner neighborhoods has led to an explosion in home values and reinvestment throughout the city helping attract more than $7 billion in new and planned development to Baltimore. Local minority- and women-owned firms are benefiting in particular from Baltimore’s economic re-birth through a doubling in the value of contract awards and equity participation in Baltimore’s largest economic development projects. Martin O’Malley understands the need for open, transparent, and results-driven government. Embracing a performance driven approach to management, O’Malley’s nationally-recognized CitiStat program tracks performance on a scale unprecedented in government helping stabilize Baltimore’s finances through budget surpluses, increasing the City’s “Rainy Day” fund, orchestrating a bailout for the City’s schools and delivering a five-year $75 million tax cut reducing Baltimore’s property tax rate to its lowest point in more than 30 years. Martin O’Malley graduated from Catholic University and the University of Maryland Law School. O’Malley was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. He served as a prosecutor from 1988 to 1990 and was elected to the City Council in 1991.
